I may not be the best one to answer your question, but I will take a shot at helping.
1. You say you had the block cut and the heads cut twice. How much P to V clearance do you have? What is your quench area clearance?
2. How much timing is just enough?
We idle a SBC that is a true static 15-1 on 87 octane pump gas. This motor is alcohol injected and we use a primer system to warm and start the car with.
3. Did you verify the pointer is at top dead center with a piston stop when you built the motor?
A little more info might be in order to really help though.
